This simple demonstration has a limited vocabulary, but is designed to be easy for readers of Scratch Programming in Easy Steps to customise. There's no scoring in this - it's just a simple demo using webcams in Scratch. Then use your hands to guide the beetle to the donuts. Make sure your webcam is set up, click the green flag to start, click Allow to let Flash use your webcam. This simple example shows how you can use your webcam to guide sprites around the screen. If you can do it, the host will do a break dance for you. In this simple maths quiz, you're challenged to answer 10 times tables questions in under 30 seconds. If you're looking for a more challenging set of words, play my Javascript Hangman. This game includes a small set of words (you can customise it with your own). Nevertheless, I've used Hangman in the book to demonstrate list handling, structured programming, and how you can get around some of Scratch's limitations to achieve effects like text on the Stage. Secondly, the text handling capabilities are somewhat limited. Firstly, there's no way to write on the screen (except by using speech bubbles), so I've used a sprite with costumes for each letter. In Scratch, it's actually a pretty hard project. In most programming languages, implementing Hangman is a pretty simple demonstration of string handling. When you've collected an item, take it back to the bottom of the screen, and a new item will appear for you to collect. Use the cursor keys to get the cat over the road safely to collect its shopping. This is another shortie from the book, but I really like the speed and fluidity of the gameplay. There's lots you can do with this effect. My first demo for this effect had fireballs raining down on a city skyline and blowing holes in it. I was quite pleased with the illusion of breaking down the wall. It only takes up two pages in the final book, and is a great illustration of how you can make simple game mechanics using very little code in Scratch. The aim is to smash through the wall at the top. Use the cursor keys to move the footballer and keep the ball in play. This is one of the quick demos in Scratch Programming in Easy Steps. This demo uses the cloning feature that was newly introduced in Scratch 2.0. I decided the game was a bit too easy in its raw form, so I made it sap your energy faster when you touch the balls, and also added some extra beachballs to dodge. The chapter concludes with tips on changing the difficulty. This is actually a modified version of the game from Scratch Programming in Easy Steps. The top-left corner shows your energy remaining: the cat gets smaller as your energy fades. In this game, you (the Scratch cat) have to dodge the beachballs and collect the ice creams. It works on both the Raspberry Pi (Scratch 1.4) and the new Scratch 2.0, but it runs much faster under Scratch 2.0. This game is the last big project in Scratch Programming in Easy Steps. Use the cursor keys to move and the spacebar to fire at the aliens who approach you from the right. Space Swarm is a classic alien shoot-em-up game. Follow that link to find videos, bonus materials and all the projects online to try in your browser! UPDATE: I have a new book now too, Cool Scratch Projects in Easy Steps. To learn how to make games and demos like these, and many more, read my book Scratch Programming in Easy Steps. To start each example game, click the green flag button. I put together this page of some of the games I've made in Scratch partly because I thought you might enjoy playing them, but also to provide an example of the kind of things you can achieve using Scratch. The programming language is widely used in schools and I've used it with adults to teach the first principles of programming. Programming in Scratch, you can easily create games and animations. No one likes coming back to a half inch of room temperature coffee from a cup they made an hour ago. Plus, you obviously get the best flavor and temperature when you drink your coffee sooner rather than later. If this is all you need-if you need to “ace” a meeting and you can then pretty much go home and call it a day-there’s nothing wrong with downing a coffee as fast as you can safely drink it. When you take a sip of coffee (or any caffeinated beverage), the effects of the caffeine start kicking in-improving focus, increasing your energy, decreasing sleepiness, and helping your general productivity quickly. Unlike a lot of other “stimulating substances,” you don’t have to sit around and wait a long time for caffeine to start working. If you need a big, short term energy and productivity boost and aren’t worried about staying energized for a longer period-by all means, slam that coffee down. The brand believes its cold brew will surely be appealing to the late night gamers and long distance drivers too, keeping them awake that bit longer. It’s no longer just iced lattes on offer at petrol stations, but flavoured iced coffees, healthy iced teas and even iced chocolate to enjoy, making it the perfect time for Black Insomnia’s Cold Brew.īlack Insomnia’s legendary caffeine hits are popular amongst certain athletes too, providing that much needed energy kick before and after a workout.Īs GB Powerlifter Freya Morrow says, “It’s the perfect pick me up in the morning and before a training session!” It’s for this reason that Black Insomnia will be selling its Cold Brew in cross fit studios across the UK as a convenience product. Just a glimpse at the shop shelves can tell you this, says Black Insomnia. A 2018 study by Allegra showed iced beverages rose by 14.8%, and with summer on the cards here in the UK, this looks set to stay. Made from the same all natural Black Insomnia Dark Roast coffee which uses a traditional Italian brewing method dating back to 1932, the Cold Brew will surely not disappoint, states the brand.Īs Crossfit Athlete Joe Taylor says: “Make sure your caffeine tolerance levels can handle it at the time you have it, or you’re not sleeping that night!”Ĭold brews really are thriving right across the globe with the hottest growth seen in the chillers when it comes to beverages. Also, cold brewed coffee is that much smoother because of the absence of a high temperature during the brewing process, which means the coffee has little to no bitterness, and is gentler on the stomach too.”īlack Insomnia Cold Brew is based on 90 Gram of coffee per litre, extracted in cold spring water over 14 hours, resulting in a very smooth yet super intense taste and a very high caffeine level. The coffee can be served either cold or ambient, as Black Insomnia explains, the name is not derived from the drinking temperature, but from the brewing temperature.ĬEO Jim Walker explains, “Cold brewed coffee is huge in the US, and the UK is rapidly following. UK-based Black Insomnia Coffee Company is introducing its new Cold Brew offering: an all natural, additive free cold brewed coffee to expand the brand’s existing range of staggering ‘4 x stronger than average’ coffees. But these are byproducts of its undoubted confidence at carrying off a visually distinctive, witty, autobiographical comedy. Arguably, it's a bit too cool for school sometimes, and it is self-conscious. That is one moment that is genuinely moving.įor some, this movie will have a Marmitey taste: it will divide opinion. Yet having succumbed almost to a breakdown over the Christmas lunch, Jordana's dad Brynn (Sion Tudor Owen) tearfully, brusquely demands that Owen think of himself as a member of their family. Like his mum's handjob confession, this is not credible, strictly speaking, but it is funny. When the illness of Jordana's mother becomes grave, Oliver reads a child-psychology book about the importance of pets and how their death introduces children to the grieving process – so he makes an appallingly misjudged attempt to poison Jordana's dog in order to soften the blow of her mother's imminent demise. She crisply informs her traumatised son later: "I gave Graham a handjob in the back of his van." Considine's spiritual ninja Graham unlocks long-forgotten passions within Jill. Everything about her life is difficult, including a workplace where the tradition is that you have to bring in your own cake on your birthday, an exquisitely uncomfortable touch. Sally Hawkins plays a repressed woman with weird Thunderbird-puppet mannerisms. As his dad, Taylor looks agonised, face deeply incised with wrinkles and far older than his years. Throughout, Oliver maintains the stunned expression of someone who has been slapped in the face with a fish, and rarely smiles. The glorious note of self-pity is sounded at the very first with Oliver's fantasy of what would happen if he committed suicide – an orgy of candle-lit vigils and sobbing teenage girls confiding their adoration for Oliver to local news teams. Jordana's mother Jude (Melanie Walters) is also seriously ill. Oliver's parents Lloyd (Noah Taylor) and Jill (Sally Hawkins) are experiencing a marital crisis triggered by the appearance of Jill's old flame Graham (Paddy Considine), a dynamic new age self-help guru who runs seminars and sells motivational videos about one's colour-aura. They get together, and the resulting placidity and comfort settles them both. She has a bullying streak and mild pyromania issues – in moments of intimacy, she likes to singe a boy's leg hairs with a lighted match. This he does in order to impress Jordana, played by Yasmin Paige, who wears a faintly disturbing red coat (Ayoade may or may not have in mind Don't Look Now). The star is Craig Roberts, playing Oliver Tate, a duffelcoat-wearing loner at school who doesn't hesitate to join in the bullying of an overweight girl whom he had secretly got off with at last term's wild-west-themed disco. Watching it, I got exactly the same exhilarated feeling as with Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead: someone very talented at comedy had been allowed to take the helm of a British feature film and do precisely what he wanted to. But it is touching, sweet and, most importantly, very funny. For me, this somehow dissolves any potential lump in the throat. I never found Submarine moving exactly, despite the heavily signposted sadness and loneliness of every single major character it runs essentially in a comedy groove and is a knight's move away from any emotional reality. His film is shaped with flair, coolly allowing us to enjoy its unrealities and to savour the suspicion that a thirtysomething's sophistication and cinephilia have been sneakily backdated into a teenager's life to offset his emotional vulnerability: a protective nostalgia. For sheer technique, Ayoade can hardly be faulted, though introducing characters in freezeframe/voiceover is getting to be a cliche. Ayoade's film has absorbed the influences of Wes Anderson and Michel Gondry in its deadpan ironies and block capital sans-serif titles, but it's still really personal and confident. It's a dark coming-of-age comedy about a lovelorn teenage boy in 1980s Swansea, written and directed by Ayoade, adapted from a novel by Joe Dunthorne, and executive produced by Ben Stiller, who appears in a subliminal cameo. But nothing in his CV prepared me for the confidence and panache of the debut movie feature now being sprung on us. Since then, he has written, directed and acted in TV shows including The Mighty Boosh, Nathan Barley and The IT Crowd, and also directed an Arctic Monkeys video. R ichard Ayoade probably first came to public attention by appearing in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, a spoof horror television series by Matthew Holness about a psychogeographically troubled Romford hospital built over the gates of hell. The comic's long life as a meme has led multiple news organizations to publish articles devoted to the meme. This led the question "Is This Loss?" to become a meme itself. The propagation of these parodies became ubiquitous to the point that people were unsure if any four-panel image they saw online was in fact a "Loss" parody. Similar to how anything with green and purple can be recognized as Daily Dose, any similar-looking four pane comic can be recognized as Loss.Įdits such as these continued to spread throughout the internet over the following decade. Usually, these would attempt to be minimalistic, portraying the characters as lines, dots, or just having four empty panels. Alternative/Minimalist InterpretationsĪlongside the outright mockery of the strip, a trend arose on /v/ which involved taking the Loss strip and representing it in different ways. On July 25th, 2009, YouTuber KennylovesArin uploaded a musical tribute based on the comic accompanied by friends Skraggy and Arin (popular animator known as Egoraptor), with lyrical references to the miscarriage strip. Someone went to the extent of making a random CAD comic generator, subtly mocking that even disjointed, mismatched panels of the comic are still funnier than the originals.Įl Santo (the webcomic overlook), The Bad Webcomic Wiki and others have also mentioned the infamous comic in negative reviews of the webcomic as well. Something Awful users were particularly unkind to the comic, creating mock threads (one of which is over 350 pages long), two entire (now closed) wikis and an interactive graph of the comic. On 4chan, the /v/ board became overrun with parodies to such an extent that moderators began banning people who opened new "Loss" threads. Other notable internet persona to mock the comic included as Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw of Zero Punctuation and Shmorky from Something Awful's Flash Tub. The strip marked a significant change in tone from the usually comedic comic, and the poorly-executed drama of the comic spurred Ctrl+Alt+Del's significant anti- fandom to mockery.Īfter the strip was posted, many notable webcomics began parodying the comic and its final panel in particular, including HijiNKS Ensue, Cyanide and Happiness, Bigger then Cheeses, EEGRA hilarity comics, Fanboys, and Slackerz. On June 2nd, 2008, Buckley posted a strip titled "Loss," in which the female lead Lilah suffers a miscarriage. Moreover, Aternos is constantly updated with the latest features and bug fixes.
